JAIMIE & ASPA

Jaimie Leonarder, AKA Jay Katz, and his wife Aspasia, AKA Miss Death, talk all things Darlo. You can catch them and their incredible vinyl collection every Sunday on Darlo rooftop from 3pm at Viva La Vinyl, or at Texas Chainsaw Trivia on Wednesdays with Coffin Ed.

WHAT DO YOU LOVE ABOUT DARLINGHURST?

We both believe that darlinghurst is the creative heart of Sydney. it has always been the home of bohemia and it’s many artistic endeavours, from its quirky book and record stores to its many art galleries.

HOW LONG HAVE YOU BEEN INVOLVED WITH DARLO BAR?

We have both been artistically involved with the Darlo for near on a decade. We’ve just celebrated 10 years of Texas Chainsaw Trivia and we are in our 4th year of our rare-groove record spinning afternoon, Viva La Vinyl. Recently we have helmed the well attended Darlo Decades dance parties.

HOW DID VIVA LA VINYL COME TO BE?

4 years ago VLV was inspired by the quirky record stores (i.e. Radio Free Alice) that surrounded the Darlo Bar. It was curated by us, with a strictly vinyl aesthetic. Initially highlighting some of the best rare groove DJs in Sydney (Black Hands, James Tsai, Georgie Zuzak, Natalie De Silva), it has evolved into this husband and wife DJ team, who bring together over 4 decades of vinyl collecting (original 33s and 45s) between them. Juxtaposing contemporary and original artists that merge comfortably together across the broad idioms of soul, funk, hip hop, electronica and pop... and here we are.

WHAT'S YOUR DRINK OF CHOICE WHEN YOU PLAY AT VLV?

Miss death loves a Lemon Lime and Bitters while spinning disks and knitting at the same time (her signature). I cannot keep my eyes off the cocktail menu, occasionally downing a Mojito or when the going gets tough reaching for an Espresso Martini.

WHAT ARE YOUR TOP 5 ALBUMS?

This is the hardest question that anyone could ask us! Cigarettes After Sex - The Electric Peanut Butter Company (Trans-Atlantic Psych Classics vol 2), Seu Jorge and Almaz (name of record), Moog Indigo by Jean Jacques Perrey, Marvin Gaye Motown Hits...

THAT PROBABLY WASN'T FAIR!
